Tucked away in a corner of Delhi’s Haus Khas Village, Tattva Kitchen has an unassuming clean & simple exterior, which gives way to a cozy 16 seater dining area with warm lights, soft music and helpful, but unobtrusive staff.
The owner, Anuradha Madhusudhanan, has turned an old house into a environmentally friendly modern restaurant with tables made from old grills, kitschy tiles and bits of art scattered around. The restaurant is frequented by the trendy shopping crowd, expats delighted to find an organic restaurant in the midst of the village, and by the odd person interested in organic food (may their tribe grow ☺) who actually came looking for it! What amazed me is not only how Anuradha has managed to get all organic ingredients together for her menu, but also how she has painstakingly put together such an enticing world cuisine. So mint & cucumber gazpacho sit along with Paste in creamy amaranth sauce, and bittergourd health shot rubs shoulders with a French bean & fennel juice!
Tattva is a gourmet organic restaurant; so even the difficult to find organic products like quinoa are imported in their organic versions. Another interesting point is the use of some of the forgotten healthy foods like amaranth. Processed foods are avoided – so canned products are big no-no. And yes, it’s completely vegetarian ☺. Anuradha share some kitchen practices with us – like the produce being washed 7 times to maintain hygiene, avoiding the use of aluminium or non stick cookware, and there being no microwave usage!
Our meal started with a ginger juice shot… very sharp, tangy and slightly sweet – a powerhouse of taste! We had ordered the 5 course meal, which included a cold herb soup with an onion base (amazing, very filling), Orange zested green salad (a light salad, low on dressing but high in flavours), a savoury tart (slightly underseasoned, but tasty & so fresh out of the oven that my mouth burnt – happily!), root salad of salsa verde (cooked beetroot & carrot in a coarse green sauce) & lajada (a yoghurt and honey based dessert with a nutty topping). We also ordered home-made tortilla chips with salsa (awesome!! The chips had amazing texture and nuttiness), pasta with creamy amaranth sauce (freshly made pasta in a super healthy alternative to regular white sauce) and a bread basket with 3 green dips (they have a wonderful range of home-made breads – fresh and healthy – but this seemed very pricey!)
All the dishes were beautifully plated and the portion sizes were perfect. There was so much more we wanted to try, but for that, we’ll have to go again ☺
We ordered a 5 course meal (available daily, changes daily), and other dishes ordered ala carte. The 5 course meal at Rs. 695 (inclusive of taxes) was sufficient for one person, and was a steal!
A meal for two with drinks is about Rs. 2500. Service charge is not included in the bill.
The positives: Tattva’s location in south Delhi’s Haus Khas Village is an advantage (although you still have to look out for a couple of sign boards to reach it!) The ambience, personalised service, the inviting menu & the light, flavoursome food are the biggest positives.
The negatives: Nothing’s ever perfect, but there wasn’t too much to complain at Tattva…. But to put it out there, here goes! I really love parsley, but the fact that almost all the dishes were garnished with it was a bit putting off, especially since fresh parsley has such a strong flavour. In terms of timing, our meal stretched to over an hour, partly because everything is prepared fresh, and I think partly because of less staff.
Tattva is a foodies delight & a health buff’s dream! And not just for organic food lovers! Go there for the wonderful & tasty food - and know that what you’re eating is just as tasty – if not more – than any other gourmet restaurant… but far more healthier! They can change the dishes to cater to specific tastes/ dietary requirements.
