There are several reasons why organic food scores over conventional pesticide and chemical laden food. These include health reasons, repercussions to the environment, the general look and feel etc. Let's discuss some more...
1. Health Benefits
a. Studies prove that organic food is more nutritious, has more minerals and vitamins as compared to conventional food.
b. Chemical additives often contain toxic substances, which harm humans in the long/short term – causing allergies/ neurological or respiratory or reproduction problems etc.
c. Poor policies and bad management are the reason why chemicals which are banned in several countries (because of their proven danger) are still being used in India. These include DDT, endosulfan etc, exposure to which have severe health repercussions.
2. Environmental Benefits
a. Reducing chemical usage in our farms will reduce their load in our environment. Many of these chemicals are carcinogenic and don’t get degraded easily, and float around in the soil, air and water.
b. Harsh pesticides also end up affecting useful insects and creatures. House sparrows and vultures are examples where population has decreased rapidly because of chemicals.
c. Practices prescribed for organic dairy involve more humane treatment to animals.
d. Using GMO foods and altering the genetic makeup of plant genes may have unknown and unpredictable effects on our food and ecological balance.
3. Miscellaneous Benefits
a. Organic Food is GMO free (Details at GM Foods ). The GM foods are still being tested and its still being debated whether they are completely harmless.
b. Farmers using organic methods are self sustained and use the animal waste etc. as fertilizers making them less dependent on buying fertilizers and pesticides.
c. If you observe conventional and organic produce, you will be able to make out the difference. While the organic melons below look normal, symmetric, pale coloured (the fruit may not be very sweet), the conventional melons are too bright, too sweet and the seeds look ruined. That’s what chemicals can do…
